SSL certificates can be divided into three different certificate levels: DV (Domain validation), OV (Organization validation) and EV (Extended validation).
DV (Domain validation): A DV-level SSL certificate is a good and affordable way to get HTTPS protection for websites. A DV-level SSL certificate is verified by email and can be obtained by anyone as long as they own a domain name and one email account. However, from a security perspective, it should be noted that even though the traffic is protected, with DV-level certificates it is not possible to know who actually maintains the site. Problems arise when fraudulent websites designed for phishing purposes obtain an SSL certificate and the site visitor unknowingly enters confidential information to criminals. Despite the dangers, there is no need to be afraid of a DV-level certificate, as it is a great solution for protecting site traffic.
OV (Organization validation): OV SSL certificates verify the existence of the company behind it. Although the level of protection is practically the same as a DV SSL certificate, with an OV SSL certificate you can be sure that the website is owned by the company. You can make purchases and enter your information on sites with this SSL certificate without any worries.
EV (Extended validation): When applying for EV SSL certificates, the existence of the company is confirmed even more strongly and is best suited for large online stores or sites that handle significant amounts of confidential data. With an EV certificate, the company name appears in green in the address bar. You can see these on websites of banks or insurance companies, for example.
RapidSSL protects the subdomains of the address company.com and www.company.com. However, this SSL certificate does not protect other subdomains (e.g. shop.company.com), so you must obtain a separate certificate for each subdomain you want to protect.
If you want to protect multiple subdomains, it is usually more economical to obtain a RapidSSL Wildcard Certificate, which protects all subdomains of the domain name as well as the main domain. In addition to the main domain, the protection applies to, for example, shop.company.com, blog.company.com and all subdomains that are connected to the domain name.
If you want to protect several different domains in a web hosting, for example www.company.fi and www.company.com, you can obtain a Thawte SSL Web Server certificate. You can connect several additional domains to this in addition to the main domain, and this way you can also protect parallel domains.
